A Conversation Between Charles Kraft, R.N. from MaxLabs US
and Sabinsa Scientist Dr. Anurag Pande
FenuSterols® Featured in IMPRESS!® Dietary Supplement for Men
This is the continuation of a discussion between Charles Kraft, R.N., V.P. of MaxLabs US Functional Health Group and Dr. Anurag Pande, Vice President of Scientific Affairs at Sabinsa Corporation.
CK: Many sexual enhancement formulas contain extracts of fenugreek and in some cases weak whole-plant materials. In fact, a recent study identified Fenugreek as one of the top-5 botanicals specified in male enhancement formulas. Dr. Pande, Could you briefly explain the vast difference between FenuSterols and some of the other raw materials in male enhancement products that are just labeled as “Fenugreek?”
Dr. Pande: Certainly. Merely adding a product with Fenugreek does not contribute to its activity unless the product is formulated with the right extract. Fenugreek extract quality can depend on a variety of factors including quality of the raw material. Often, ingredient manufacturers depend on the raw material quality determination of the vendors from which they buy. At Sabinsa we have our own, very stringent raw material specification against which all of the incoming raw materials are vetted. Raw material quality of our fenugreek is determined by assessing for the content of actives, absence of pesticides, microbial load and heavy metals. Our vendor qualification program also ensures that the raw material is obtained from pre-qualified vendors. Once the extract is manufactured it again is subjected to rigorous testing to ensure that the finished ingredient meets all the quality requirements of the finished product. A product with the wrong or incomplete determination of actives may not give a consistent activity or results.

CK: As a producer of male sexual enhancement products we hear a lot of questions about Yohimbine (yohimbe to some). Mostly, guys will ask “Hey, you can’t really be doing a male enhancement product if you don’t include yohimbe! Are you?” Obviously, our team found a wide array of extremely potent alternatives that target erectile performance, strength, stamina, etc. As clinicians though, we always consider safety every bit as important as efficacy. Yohimbe may demonstrate some benefits, but it had one of the worst safety profiles of any material we reviewed. We really liked the fact FenuSterols could deliver pro-testosterone characteristics, but do so with an incredible safety profile. As an expert, can you provide us some detail on how well FenuSterols is tolerated and its overall safety as a supplement?
"We really liked the fact FenuSterols could deliver pro-testosterone characteristics, but do so with an incredible safety profile."
Dr. Pande: Actually, the choice to include FenuSterols in IMPRESS! is one of the safest choices you can make in men’s health products. Fenugreek, has been known as a well-tolerated food, with its use as a flavor enhancer for ages in conventional foods. Not only the seeds, but the leaves and other major aerial parts are used as delicious food preparations in the Northern parts of India. Further, fenugreek is known for other health benefits in Ayurveda which is a 5000 year old science still practiced in India to this day. Even in the extract form which has a high therapeutic dosage, the fenugreek seed-based extracts have excellent safety profiles. This was further corroborated in a clinical study in diabetic subjects who consumed Fenugreek seed equivalent to deliver 1.5g of furostanol saponins. The study showed no side effects on renal or hepatic function.

We will be happy to speak with you again soon for Part III of our series.
